About Log Filter

Do you deal with large log files and would like to exclude certain items, or only include others? Then you may find this program useful.

It was made primarily to help analyze web server logs. Often when you're working on a site, you make quite a lot of hits to that site yourself while testing it, and this program can be used to exclude those entries by filtering out entries containing your IP address. You could also narrow the log down to only include a certain directory for example. The program is not restricted to web server logs, but that is one use of the program.

We're giving this software away for free, but it is unsupported and you may find bugs. It isn't as fully featured as our main commercial product, PhileSplitter, for example, plus this one only took a few minutes to write, so you can download it for free!

This software does not need to be installed, just run the executable. If you encounter problems you may need to install the VB Runtimes.

How to use

Start by setting up the include and exclude filters you want. Lines containing anything you add to the exclude list will be filtered out. If you enter any include entries, lines which don't contain them will also be filtered out.

Lines starting with # are always included.

The "Convert log to lowercase" option can be used to convert all log entries to lowercase, which is useful for importing logs into some programs which don't correctly handle uppercase filenames for example.

You can filter a single file at a time, by selecting a source file, entering the destination filename and using the "Filter single file" button. Alternatively, you can click the "Filter folder" button to filter an entire directory (clicking the button will also prompt you for a destination directory for the filtered files to be saved to).

The "replace EXE with HTM" option replaces filenames inside logs that have the EXE extension with HTM. This can be useful when analyzing web server logs with analyzers that don't provide statistics for EXE files.

Note that if you don't enter any include filters, everything is included other than entries you add to the exclude filters. If you do enter include filters, then items are excluded by default and only get included if they are in the include filters and they are not in the exclude filters.
