PhileSplitter 3 FAQ

What types of files can PhileSplitter split?

PhileSplitter can split all types of file. However, note that the contents of CAB files will automatically be extracted when the file is re-assembled.

Is it possible to split multiple files at once or must each file be split seperately?

PhileSplitter 3.0 is now capable of splitting an entire folder (including any subfolders). If you would like to split multiple files that are not in the same folder you should copy those files into the same folder and then select this new folder for splitting

Do fragments require PhileSplitter to re-assemble them?

Providing you enable the BAT Generation feature the only thing you need to re-assemble the fragments is the BAT file. Note that you cannot use encryption or compression when this feature is used?

What are PhileSplitter’s limits / specifications?

Unfortunately, due to a lack of equipment we are not able to actually test out using very large files, fragments and large numbers of fragments. However, in theory the limits are as follows...

  • Maximum file that can be splitted: approximately 2Gb
  • Minimum fragment size: 10kb
  • Maximum fragment size: 100Mb
  • Maximum number of fragments a file can be split into: approximately 32,000

Note: The new PhileSplitter 2003 supports much larger sizes than these

Can I split a large file onto multiple ZIP disks / CD-ROMs / other storage devices?

Unfortunately since we do not possess any such devices we are unable to test for compatibility. If you have such a device we would appreciate you testing this for us and letting us know if it works! Keep in mind, however, that you cannot split files much larger than 2Gb (and we haven’t even tried files that big) and you can’t have fragments greater than 100Mb. The fragment limitation means that space on such disks would be wasted anyway unless you carried a few fragments per disk. If the fragment limitation is the only thing preventing full ZIP disk / CD-ROM compatibility then we will make increasing it a priority.

Can I split a file directly onto disk?

Yes! PhileSplitter’s DiskDirect feature lets you do exactly this. If the disk does not contain enough space you will be asked if you would like to format the disk.

Can I distribute fragments over the Internet?

Yes and we strongly recommend this if you have a large file to distribute. This is because…

  • PhileSplitter’s compression is stronger than ZIP for most files
  • Users are able to download the first few fragments and then come back later for the rest - this is also useful if a user is suddenly cut off as any fragments that have already downloaded are unaffected
  • A user downloading the fragments does not need their own copy of PhileSplitter. All you must do is remember to generate a BAT file while splitting. When an end user wants to assemble the file, they just put all the files in the same directory and double-click the BAT file. Note that you although you can use compression with this feature, if you enable compression and the BAT generator at the same time, there is no support for long filenames and it is unlikely that fragments will assemble on operating systems older than Windows 95.

Does PhileSplitter use checksums / CRC verification?

Providing the BAT-Generator is not enabled, checksums are always used on each fragment to identify one that has been corrupted.

Can I compress files using PhileSplitter without splitting them?

Yeah, sure! Just use the "Make CAB only" button. However you can only currently split folders containing multiple files in this manner, not single files. You also cannot use encryption or generate a BAT while doing this.

Does PhileSplitter support long filenames?

Most of the time, yes. However, there is no long filename support for files split using both compression and the BAT generator at the same time. This is because although it is possible to decompress the information from the BAT using Windows 95’s built-in decompressor, this decompressor does not support long filenames unfortunately. In additon, if you use the Send To PhileSplitter shell extension, long filenames may not be preserved.

Can I make my own themes?

Not yet, look for this feature coming soon in a future version. Registered users will receive a free upgrade.

Can I distribute the ActivePhileSplitter control with my own programs?

Providing you are a registered user of PhileSplitter then yes you are licensed to do so totally royalty-free. However it is illegal to distribute the licensing information from the registry. Users of the program do not need to have PhileSplitter installed.

When I try to use the ActivePhileSplitter control I get the message "You do not have the license to use this functionality" or a similar message.

Applications that utilize the ActivePhileSplitter control may only be created by registered users of PhileSplitter. If you have registered the program you must load PhileSplitter and enter your serial number - this will create the licensing information required to use ActivePhileSplitter. This licensing information is copyright and must not be distributed with ActivePhileSplitter. The licensing information is not required to run compiled programs that utilize the ActivePhileSplitter control.
